As a fan of Irish music, whenever a new Irish Band appears on my radar, I always take an active interest.  Naturally, since this site's about sandwiches, learning HamsandwicH was from Ireland made my head explode.  However, putting the sandwich connection aside, some of their songs are really amazing.

Who is HamsandwicH?

Currently, they only have three members, Niamh Farrell, Podge McNamee, and Brian Darcy.  The band hails from Kells, County Meath in Ireland, and have a large fan base there.  

The band originally consisted of Niamh Farrell (vocals), Podge McNamee (vocals and guitar), Brian Darcy (guitar and piano), and Ollie Murphy (drums), while adding David McEnroe (bass) later on.  However, Ollie Murphy and David McEnroe left the group in 2019 and 2017, respectively.

They've had three albums, Carry The Meek (2008), White Fox (2010), and Stories From The Surface (2015), and are supposedly working on a new one.  They've already released a few singles since then; and we're looking forward to even more.

After listening to HamsandwicH's full body of work, we could feel our heads about to explode!  We're shared a couple of those songs down below.

We wanted to learn more about Elsa Birgitta Bekman, and where she came from.  However, she is a riddle, wrapped in a favourite sandwich, inside two slices of ham and a single piece of cheese.  So, we had to do a little research on our own. 

Humble Beginnings

First, we wanted to find out where she is originally from.  According to the V2 Records Web Site, Elsa Bekman is the daughter of a half French, half Swedish mother.  She grew up in The Netherlands, but spent a lot of time in France and Sweden, and was raised on a variety of musical styles.⁹ 

The Tibbs

It turns out that Elsa was also previously in a band called the The Tibbs, from 2012 to 2018.  According to The Tibbs web site, their music is a combination of Rhythm & Blues, Funk, Jazz, Pop and Ska, and brings a unique blend of garage soul that could be traced back to the Detroit and Philly sounds of the ’60s and ’70s.⁴ 

Apparantly, Elsa Bekman was one of the original members, and she really gave their videos an amazing amount of energy.

We can honestly say that Elsa Bekman added a ton of oomph to that band.  They have a new lead singer now, and The Tibbs are a pretty good band, but Elsa gave it that extra-something special.

In 2019, she released her 1st album, "Once in my Life", which included the song we always love to play, "You're not my Favourite Sandwich."

We've said it before, and we'll say it again, Elsa Birgitta Bekman and Jade Welling were wonderful in this video.  And Jade's violin playing really added "flavour" to the song.⁶  We hope that they continue to make more tasty sandwich songs in the future!

Let's be honest, when we saw a Music Label with the name Burger Records, we thought it was one of the coolest things ever.  However, after reading about what happened at the label over the last year, that adoration turned to disappointment.

About 7 months ago, we read that Burger Records was the next victim of "cancel culture" and their bands were accused of predatory behavior towards young woman.  What was generally considered normal behavior by rock bands 50, 30, or even 10 years ago isn't going to fly in this age of social media.  So, the label president took the bullet and agreed to part ways. 

However, whoever took over the wheel at Burger Records couldn't turn that ship around, and they ceased operations in July of 2020.

Let us just say, this label wasn't just hip for their name.  They also released most of their music on cassettes, which is awesome in itself.  They also hosted a festival called the Burger A-Go-Go, which is beyond cool.

Honestly, I think the main reason they crashed was due to a lack of Sandwich Bands.  Sad as it seems, it looks like Burger Records is gone forever.

Who is Elsa Birgitta Bekman?  And why does she spell "favourite" with an extra letter? 

You're Not My Favourite Sandwich may be the existential sandwich song, touching on the most basic of human foodly emotions.  Truly, there are few songs that are quirky enough to stand on its own legs, and also evoke a desire for sandwich-making in the kitchen.

However, I have to say that the way she treats her favorite sandwich is utterly dispicable.  Here's a loving sandwich that sacrifices its existance to give her pleasure, yet her only appreciation is to discard it into an open field.  To make matters worse, she equates man at a higher level than sandwich, which in our LastSandwich universe is the ultimate sin.  Sandwich is life.  Sandwich is forever.

Yet, we still enjoyed Elsa's song, as well as her amazing sandwich-making ability.  So, who exactly is Elsa Bekman?  We Googled it to find out. 

Elsa Birgitta Bekman (born September 13, 1991) is a Dutch singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, music video director and music video producer with French and Swedish roots.⁷
