Celebrated on January 14th.  This holiday is celebrated by restaurants the world over, which in turn offer special promotions for Hot Pastrami Sandwiches. The origins of the holiday are unknown.  

Who created the Hot Pastrami Sandwich?  

The credit for creating the first pastrami sandwich usually goes to New York's Sussman Volk in 1887.  Volk was a kosher butcher and a New Yorker, who immigrated from Lituania.  He claimed that the recipe came from a Romanian friend in exchange for keeping the friend's luggage while the friend stayed in Romania.  Patricia Volk, a descendant of Sussman Volk, claimed Sussman used the receipe in his butcher shop and served it on sandwiches, and it became so popular that Volk changed the butcher shop into a restaurant which primarily sold pastrami sandwiches.

Almost every starving artist has survived on cheap sandwiches at some point in their career.  So, it's perfectly natural that every artist has a song about their favorite sandwich.  Sometimes, it's just the idea of what a sandwich represents (see the song by Terence Trent D'Arby).  There's nothing more Rock and Roll than a good sandwich!

The Tulip Time Out Cafe' has Burgers and Hot Dogs in several weight classes (think small, medium, and large).  And, they all have some Danish flavor added to them, which is reflected in the Denmark flags hanging from the 2nd floor. 

As much as I love the unique Danish flavor added to traditional style hot dogs (relish, onion, mustard), sometimes a regular hot dog is the only thing one craves.  So, if that's what you want, make it clear when ordering.  Otherwise, you will be eating a Danish Dog instead of a Classic Dog. 

Great Customer Service

In terms of customer service, I would have to give it 5 out of 5 stars.  The owner is friendly, and they are willing to make the food in anyway requested.  For example, I love to have the Dog sliced in the middle and grilled, with only the traditional Hot Dog toppings.  They were more than willing to accommodate that request. 

Last Sandwich Question

As always, we face the eternal question, if one was on a deserted isle and this going to be our last sandwich, would this be one that we choose.  

Would I choose this as my last sandwich?   They had great customer service and we like the food, but the answer would have to be... No.  

However, it's a great place to go on a weekday afternoon to meet a couple of friends before going shopping (it's right next to the Ximen MRT).  Also, it's nice to have a Classic Style Hot Dog or Hamburger in Taiwan once in a while.

What is a sandwich? 

A sandwich is life.  A sandwich is everything.  A sandwich is forever. 

Since a sandwich is formed of living cells, does that make a sandwich alive? 

Yes.  Life is an emergent property of nonliving things.¹

When is a sandwich more than a sandwich? 

When it enters your mouth. 

If you take a bite of a sandwich in an empty room, does the sandwich still exist? 

No matter what anyone else tells you, existance is based on your perception and yours alone.  If you are in the empty room, the sandwich exists.  If you are not in the room, then No, it does not exist. 

If we are covered in microscopic creatures, with our body in the middle, does that make us a sandwich? 

A sandwich is comprised of two pieces of bread, with something in the middle.  Bread is composed of naturally occurring microbes, chemicals, industrially produced yeast, or high-pressure aeration.  If the microscopic creatures are components of bread, then Yes, you are a sandwich.  If the microscopic creatures are something else, then No, you are not a sandwich.²

Can a sandwich be something else?

Sandwich is a sandwich is a sandwich is a sandwich.³

How many sandwiches would it take fill your stomach? 

The universal answer is 12.

What impact has the sandwich had on humanity's history, art, and culture?

A tremendous amount.  People write songs about their favorite sandwiches, make paintings, and it even influences their politics.  For example, there was a British politician who had a hard time eating a bacon sandwich, someone took a picture, it became a meme, and it influenced voters in the following election.  Sandwiches are embedded in every facet of modern day society, and has a greater impact than anyone could ever possibly imagine.⁴

When is a sandwich not a sandwich? 

When it is completely eaten.

Do we have to enjoy each and every sandwich?

Yes, we have to appreciate a sandwich for everything it offers, it's history, it's art, it's culture.  We have to enjoy its aroma, its texture, and enjoy each bite of every sandwich.

And... on my last day, what would I choose to be my Last Sandwich?
